Saturday, May 3 Walnut Creek, CA to Sutherlin, OR 450 miles

We had a long ride today.  We don't think we can get a toothpick extra into the car.  I always over pack...  We were out of the house on time and made our first Starbucks run of the trip.  It is a warm and sunny day and quite beautiful.  We stopped at my cousin's house in Redding. Pam made a lovely lunch. Pam and Don made us most welcome and they had a new fishing pole and a book on salmon fishing in Alaska for Fred.  We think Don has an ulterior motive since they will be joining us in Juneau, AK in July. While we ate lunch Merlin wandered in their huge yard.  He was fascinated by the koi pond.  Fortunately he didn't fall in.

Mount Shasta stood out in all her glory as we headed for the Oregon border.

We finally arrived in Sutherlin about 6:15 pm.  We are anxious to stretch our legs.  This Best Western Plus Hartford Lodge is one of the nicest Best Westerns we have ever been in.  http://bestwesternoregon.com/hotels/best-western-plus-hartford-lodge  We usually use this chain because we have my little dog, Merlin, and they are pet friendly.  They have warm cookies ready for us and a bone for Merlin, but we need dinner.  Fred asked for a recommendation for pizza at the front desk.  We were told that Abby's was a favorite.  We called and got a gourmet pizza in less than 30 minutes.  We will definitely keep them in the program.  http://www.abbys.com/
