Saturday, May 10 Anacortes to Friday Harbor 2 hours 22.5 miles

We have spent this last week getting Emerald Star ready and provisioning from Costco & Safeway.  We won't go hungry for awhile.  We have had our usual challenges.  We have a wacky hot water heater that has an overflow valve that dumps right into the bilge.  Fred has worked very hard to have a dry bilge (via the engine room carpet) and this has been a huge pain in the neck. Fred was down replacing the temperature/pressure valve to try and prevent this water dumping into the bilge.  Unbeknownst to him, the water heater pressurize itself so that when he pulled the valve out he got a snoot full of water.  I heard some colorful language coming from the engine room.  There is a new valve on the hot water heater and the bilge is dry...so far.
We had some work done on the generator and heater (central heat).  The generator now has a device to separate exhaust gas and water, thus making it much quieter.  One of Fred's pet peeves was a clicking sound of the heater fuel pump heard in the cockpit.  Our mechanic fixed this beautifully.  Now Fred can smoke his cigars outside in peace and quiet.
Merlin is unsure of all this.  When we take him for a walk and are back to the boat  he does this mule thing where he sits down and won't move.  We either have to drag him or pick up all 23 lbs. of him.
Our stops this morning will be to put the car into storage and head to the fuel dock.   Then out into the San Juan's.
The most frustrating thing right  now is that the battery is dead in our Globalstar satellite phone.  This means that we cannot access ocens (emeraldstar@ocens.net)  on the boat now.  We are in a Starbucks in Anacortes writing this missive.  We will only have email access in places that have wifi available.  We will keep you up to date.
